Shapeshifting by Cynthia Sharp

Sunset is pink
on the belly of the dragon
highlighting his majestic scales
as he emerges
from the murky purple water
of the swamp
until the clouds reshape
and he dissolves
into curling puffs
of smoking breath
all that remain
of his splendor

  1. Wonderful, Cynthia. I must admit I was assuming this magnificent dragon was appearing from across English Bay, so "swamp" seemed a bit less grand than he deserved even though I should have been alerted in advance with the word murky, not really a word one should expect of ocean.
Wordy as I am, I am always amazed at the evocative images you can come up with in so few lines.

  2. Wendy :) Thanks so much for taking the time to visit and comment! Perhaps he should be above English Bay, more befitting of his grandeur!
